In Rushinga, Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe, eight self-proclaimed prophets drowned during a ceremony in a rivers
On Saturday, October 30, prophets from the Vadzidzi vaJeso Apostolic sect drowned in Mazowe River.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the Hungumwe River, near the confluence with the Mazowe Tsvinje River, when the prophets fell into a trance during their annual Passover ceremony and stampeded into the river, drowning.
According to local media, the prophets were competing to retrieve a “holy stick” from the river’s deep waters during a baptismal ritual.
Timothy Maregere, the provincial development coordinator for Mashonaland Central Province, confirmed the incident and stated that their bodies had since been recovered.
“There were ten ‘prophets’ in the group, and only two survived,” Maregere explained.
On Sunday, Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo identified the deceased as Nickson Singano, 29, Peter Marera, 31, Tendai Marera, 28, Alexeio Makombe, 26, Tichawana Katiyo, 32, Isaac Dokora, 21, Lanciot Dokora, 34, and Chriswell Kunyengerera.
